End of season Sophomores report
with coach Erin Navolio February 20
Q: How do you
hope the players benefitted from this season?
Navolio: “My role as coach is to prepare
them for the varsity level. There is a significant leap from the freshman to
the sophomore level and an even greater leap to varsity. I hope they have begun
to understand the intensity and commitment that is involved at the varsity
level.”
Q: In what ways do you
feel the team or players progressed?
Navolio: “I think they definitely improved on their skill level. During the
second half of the season, we were able to execute a number of plays by being
patient and waiting for the right shot. As they became more confident players,
they started to play as a team and really compete.”
Q: Are there any memorable games or game moments?
Navolio: “The Downers Grove North game
at Downers Grove sticks out in my mind. We started off slow and were down at
halftime. We came back to win it in the second half by really pushing the ball
and attacking the basket. Our free throws and defense were the winning
components of the game. While it was a loss, the home game verses Lyons
Township was one of our strongest offensive games. We came out confident and
really executed our offense well. The girls really played with intensity and
heart.”

Mid-season Sophomores report
with coach Erin Navolio January 4
Q:
Are there any games that particularly stand out?
Navolio: “The most recent games that stand out to me are the Batavia tournament games. The team had just
finished with finals and the girls had a few days off at Christmas. Everyone came back refreshed and focused. The first day
of the tournament we won both games because we played as a team and moved the ball well which created a lot good shot opportunities.”
Q:
How difficult was playing multiple games at Batavia, including even back-to-back and on consecutive days? Navolio:
“We finished the tournament 2-2. We played back-to-back games on the second day. We played tough against a good Lincoln
Way-Central Team. We fought back from a 12-2 deficit in the first quarter to be only down by 1 at half. The loss in the second
game was mostly due to the fatigue of playing four games in two days.”
Q:
In what areas do you feel the team has progressed most?
Navolio: “They are more comfortable with each other and they have really begun to play as a team. A number
of players are beginning to understand their role.”
Have injuries and/or illness affected your team this season?
“We have had a tough go with injuries and illness since Thanksgiving. At one point we had three starters out. It required
the rest of the team to step up. We are looking forward to a healthier and more successful second half of the season.”
Q: What is the focus for the remainder of the season?
Navolio: “We will continue to work on skills and perfecting our plays. The girls are looking forward to
having more home games and getting a second chance to beat conference teams.”

Post-tournament interview
with coach Erin Navolio
Q:
In what areas did the team
perform well or make significant progress over the four tournament games? What
are areas in which the team hopes to improve?
Navolio:
“The sophomore team did a great job using the press during the tournament.
Their continuous movement caused the opposing teams to turn the ball over
often. We were then able to convert those turnovers into easy layups. It
really helped us build solid leads in the games.
“We need to get better at being patient on offense. We
sometimes panic or get nervous and turn the ball over rather than wait to get
the open shot. We need to work more on setting up the play and
waiting for the opening.”
Q: What were some keys to the
outcome of the Oak-Park River Forest game (50-40 loss in Saturday’s third-place
game)? Were there any added challenges because the team also plays
OPRF Tuesday?
Navolio: “When we play Oak Park on Tuesday, we need to do a better
job of stopping their drive. We also need to do a better job of
rebounding and only allow them to get one shot. If we are patient against
their zone defense and play at our own pace as we did on Saturday, we
will be successful.”
Q: Were there any players who made significant contributions
in particular games or over the four tournament games?
Navolio: “Sarah Cernugel did a great job
against Oak Park by attacking the middle of the zone defense and dishing to her teammates for a shot. Kendall Butler
did a great job of being active on the boards and really hustling on the defensive end.”
