|
Kate Gross hit the second of two free throws with 4.0 seconds to give
Downers Grove North a 46-45 West Suburban Silver victory over the Red Devils Tuesday in Hinsdale.
The Red Devils then called a timeout, but the baseball-style inbounds pass from underneath their basket was intercepted
and the Trojans ran out the clock.
Tessa Howe had 14 points for Hinsdale Central. Eleanor Monyek added 11 points and Nina Sarros eight.
Lanie Randle, Maria Rivera and Conley had four each. Ryann Wendt had 18 points and Gross 11 for the Trojans.
Both players had two three-pointers.
Hinsdale Central tied the game 45-45 on Angie Conley's short baseline jumper with 20 seconds left. After the Trojans missed
their third straight one-and-bonus free throw, the Red Devils missed a go-ahead shot.
Gross got the rebound and was fouled by the Red Devils, whose 10th foul for the second half put the Trojans in the double
bonus.
Howe's six fourth-quarter points helped Hinsdale Central overcome a 39-32 deficit entering the fourth quarter.

Video highlights vs. York
|
In less than one week, the Hinsdale Central girls basketball team showed significant progress
and nearly was rewarded with a huge victory.
After leading most of the way, the Red Devils saw York score the final seven points to pull out a 47-43 West Suburban
Conference Silver Division victory in Hinsdale.
The Red Devils’ Tessa Howe had 13 points with one three, Lanie Randle had 12 points with two threes and Eleanor
Monyek had 10 points. Nina Sarros had six points and several rebounds.
Hinsdale Central (1-2, 0-2 in Silver) opened a double-digit lead in the second quarter and went into halftime ahead 29-27.
York (4-0, 2-0) cut the deficit to 37-34 entering the fourth quarter and took the lead for good 44-43 on Mariann Bliss’
three-pointer under pressure with 1:30 to go.
The Dukes won last year’s Silver title by one game over Downers Grove North and Lyons Township and reached the Class
4A sectional finals.
Hinsdale Central coach Karen Persinger thought the Red Devils had a much more consistent effort than their previous game,
a 42-28 loss at Downers Grove North Feb. 13.
“We moved forward from (Downers North),” Persinger said. “You look at the things, the mistakes we made
and at times losing our composure, I thought we did a much better job of playing disciplined basketball (Friday). In the first
half, we made mistakes but we didn’t allow that to rattle us. We made the next play.”
York rallied by making five threes in the second half and, more significantly, having 22 free throws overall (14 made) to
only 7 for the Red Devils (4 made).
With the Dukes in the one-and-bonus, Bliss added another free throw with 1:00 remaining and Sydney Molis made her first
of two with 42.7 seconds for a 46-43 margin.
The Red Devils had good looks down the stretch –a potential game-tying three by Randle, who sank two threes in the first
quarter, and a shot by Monyek along the right of the lane in which a deflection rather than a foul was called. Bliss added
a free throw with 17.8 seconds.
“Lanie got a good look at a three at the end. I’ll take that shot all day long,” Persinger said. “They
made shots and we didn’t in the second half, fortunately too many beyond the (three-point) arc.”
Earlier in the fourth quarter, the Red Devils had been holding back the Dukes’ comeback on a Howe basket for a 39-36
lead and their final basket inside from Sarros for a 43-40 advantage.
“Give York credit. In the third quarter, they came out right at us and we got on our heels a little bit,”
Persinger said. “(We) just could never quite find our footing again, just weren’t as confident offensively. I
felt at times when we miss one and they make one, we add pressure to ourselves to make the next one and that kind of snowballed
on us a little.”

Hinsdale Central 56, Proviso East 43
The Hinsdale
Central girls
basketball team continues playing its best this season at the most opportune
time.
The Red Devils’ fourth straight victory Wednesday was the sweetest so far.
The lower-seeded Red Devils advanced to the Class 4A Hinsdale Central Regional
finals by defeating Proviso East 56-43 in the regional semifinals.
Hinsdale Central (11-17), the No. 10 seed in the Proviso West Sectional, meets
No. 2 Downers Grove North (26-6) at 7 p.m. Friday for the regional title. The
Red Devils lost both regular-season West Suburban Conference Silver Division
meetings with the Trojans, but since the second loss Jan. 25, the Red Devils have
gone 5-2 and won five of their last six.
Against No. 7 Proviso East, the Red Devils led most of the way after taking control
with a 17-3 second quarter for a 33-13 halftime lead – arguably their best overall
quarter this season.
The Pirates came within eight points a couple of times in the second half – the
last at 47-39 with 3:28 remaining -- but then went scoreless until the final
minute after the Red Devils previously withstood the comeback with key baskets or defensive
stops.
Sophomore Eleanor Monyek led all scorers with 21 points, including a
three-pointer and conventional three-point play. Senior Sarah Cernugel had 18
points with 9-for-10 free-throw shooting, concluding with 5-for-6 in the final
minutes. Sophomore reserve Tessa Howe had 12 points all in the first half with
two first-quarter threes.
In that opening quarter, Monyek scored the Red Devils’ first eight points and
Howe the last eight for a 16-10 lead. Hinsdale Central opened the second
quarter with an 8-0 run and concluded with a 7-0 run for the 20-point halftime
advantage. Cernugel scored 6 points and was 4-for-4 from the line in the
period.
The Pirates made three of their four threes in the third quarter and cut the
gap to 42-34.
In the fourth quarter, Cernugel scored on the Red Devils’ opening possession
and later drove and scored from the middle of the lane to put the Red Devils
ahead 49-39 fewer than 10 seconds after the Pirates again closed to eight.
Earlier, senior Kendall Butler nailed a key three for a 47-34 lead after
missing a one-and-bonus free throw but senior Maiwen Amegadjie getting the
offensive rebound.
The Red Devils will try for their first regional title since 2015. Friday’s winner
plays at Proviso West at 7:30 p.m. Monday against No. 3 Lyons Township or No. 6
Nazareth Academy. LT defeated the Red Devils twice during the regular season.

Hinsdale Central 48, Timothy Christian 45
The Hinsdale Central girls basketball team ended the Brenda Whitesell Invitational Friday with its best offensive
output over four tournament games.
The Red Devils (2-2) also rallied in the fourth quarter to pull out a 48-45 victory over Timothy Christian in the crossover
meeting of the two brackets’ sixth-place finishers.
After Eleanor Monyek sank two free throws with 24.8 seconds left in a one-and-bonus situation to open a three-point lead,
the Red Devils held after the Trojans called a timeout with 11.1 seconds.
Timothy 6-foot-2 post player Grace Roland missed her only three-point attempt of the game under pressure from Maiwen Amedgajie
and the Red Devils’ Lanie Randle grabbed the rebound. Randle was fouled and missed her one-and-bonus free throw, but
with less than a second left, the Trojans were unable to take another shot.
Sarah Cernugel had a game-high 15 points, finishing with three three-pointers after she scored six of the Red Devils’
first eight points with three two-point baskets.
Monyek and Amegadjie had 12 points and three rebounds apiece with Amegadjie and Cernugel each scoring six points in the
fourth quarter. Other contributors included Randle (5 points, 6 rebounds, 3 steals), Kendall Butler and Nina Sarros (2
points each) and Maria Rivera (3 steals).
Hinsdale Central’s four tournament games were decided by nine total points and this was the second decided by three.
Trailing 36-34 after three quarters, the Red Devils took four three-point leads in the final quarter. They went ahead
39-36 on their first two possessions with a Cernugel three and Amegadjie’s inside bucket off a Monyek pass. An Amegadjie
hook shot gave the Red Devils a 41-38 lead and, after Timothy briefly went ahead 43-41, another Cernugel three and Amegadjie
basket right of the lane put the Red Devils ahead to stay 46-43 with 2:16 left.
Perhaps the Red Devils’ biggest scoring spurt came in the third quarter after trailing 25-20 at halftime. They
scored the first four points on an Amegadjie putback and two Monyek free throws to close to 25-24. Monyek’s three tied
the game at 27 and the Red Devils tied the game again 34-34 when Cernugel stole the ball and found Randle for a fast-break
layup.
The Trojans, who started no seniors, scored moreso with their strong inside height, including two baskets directly
off inbounds passes underneath.

St. Francis 36, Hinsdale Central 34
In the final seconds of the season opener, Lanie Randle turned
and fired an incredible three-point bank shot that would have put the Hinsdale Central girls basketball team ahead. Unfortunately,
Randle was called for traveling and the basket was nullified. That was the kind of effort and comeback the Red Devils staged
in their 36-34 loss to St. Francis in the opening round of the expanded Hinsdale South Brenda Whitesell Invitational
at Hinsdale Central after falling behind 31-21 with 5:23 left. Randle and Eleanor Monyek each had nine points
for the Red Devils and Sarah Cernugel had eight. Randle (three) and Cernugel (two) combined for the team's five three-pointers. Cernugel
also had four steals and Nina Sarros contributed well off the bench with two fourth-quarter assists and four rebounds. St.
Francis' Maggie Culver (11 points) was the only player in double figures. The Spartans were minus one starter and had two
others injured or absent. Cernugel sank two free throws with 24.5 second remaining to cut the deficit to 35-34, but
the Red Devils' next foul put the Spartans in the double bonus. Katie Anne De Craene made the first of the two automatic
attempts to put St. Francis back ahead by two. The traveling call came with just 1.0 left. The Spartans
successfully inbounded to run out the clock. Monyek's fast-break basket with 3:39 left began a scoring flurry that
got the Red Devils back into the game. Randle sank a three, Monyek converted a conventional three-point play and Cernugel
hit a three with 1:14 left to close the Red Devils to 33-32. The Spartans' Elena Castaneda then sank two one-and-bonus
free throws with 42.8 seconds after Katelin Chaparro sank two one-and-bonus free throws for their previous points. Monyek's
three-point play free throw was the first free throw the Red Devils converted after missing their first 11. They finished
the game 3 for 14. St. Francis made 4 of its last 5 to finish 9 for 19 from the line. The Red Devils nearly overcame
two 9-0 scoring runs by the Spartans. The second came after they took a brief 14-13 lead on the first possession
of the third quarter but then later went scoreless for the next 8:35 after closing to 22-21. Hinsdale Central had scored
the first basket but the Spartans scored the other nine points of the first quarter. The Red Devils
closed to 13-12 by halftime and went ahead 14-13 on Monyek's basket from the left of the lane. After the Spartans answered
with a Sullivan three, Maiwen Amegadjie's rebound basket tied the game 16-16. Following back-to-back baskets by Culver,
Randle's three and Kendall Butler's putback basket with 4:14 left in the third quarter cut the deficit to one point twice. The
Red Devils had four of their only 15 turnovers to close out the third quarter after committing 7 on their first 11 possessions
of the game. St. Francis, 12-21 in 2018-19, returns five of last season's 10 juniors and its lone sophomore (Chaparro)
from that roster. Hinsdale Central will play Plainfield South at 10 a.m. Saturday in the consolation semifinals
of the Hinsdale Central bracket. With the three-level invite expanded from eight to 16 teams, Hinsdale Central has been added
as a host site this season.

Varsity game summary Schaumburg 56, Hinsdale Central 31 Wednesday, Dec. 26 Wheaton
North's Bill Neibch Falcon Classic First round
|
For the first time this season, the Hinsdale Central girls basketball
team played man-to-man defense for an extended period of time Wednesday.
By the switch from their usual 1-2-2 zone in the second half, the Red Devils were behind by
double digits in their 56-31 loss to Schaumburg in the opening round of Wheaton North’s
Bill Neibch Falcon Classic. The Red Devils (2-10) play in the consolation quarterfinals
of the 16-team bracket at 1:30 p.m. Thursday against Elk Grove (3-9), which lost 71-48
Wednesday to top-seeded and undefeated Wheaton North (10-0). No. 8 seed Schaumburg (9-6) has won six in a row.
“We went man the second half because I said, ‘I’m going to hold
each one of your accountable (defensively). I’m going to know,’ ”
Hinsdale Central coach Karen Persinger said. “I thought we did a really nice
job and I actually started to hear their voices. They were communicating much better
on the defensive end but then we got stagnant on the offensive end. Now we just need to put both ends together.” Maddie
Bokich had one of her best shooting games of the season with three threes for nine points. Sarah Cernugel had eight
points and two threes and Maria Rivera and Maiwen Amegadjie each had four points.
Rivera also had eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Tina Rivera had six rebounds and
a block, Kendall Butler added five rebounds and Cernugel and Tina Rivera each had three
assists. Hinsdale Central trailed 37-14 by halftime after the Saxons' stretch of
9-for-12 shooting that included five of their single-game season-high nine three-pointers
for a 28-7 advantage. For the first half, Schaumburg made 14 of 30 shots, including
8 of 17 from three-point range. “They shot extremely well form the three-point
line. I think it was a combination (of that and our defense),” Persinger said.
“It’s easy to be a good shooter when we’re slow on the rotation. Something that was such
a strength for us at the start of the season with our communication and rotation has become a little
flat. I decided I had to mix it up (defensively) and challenge them a little bit and
held them accountable. I though the girls did a better job and did communicate. Now
we just have to put together four quarters.” The Saxons’ hot shooting
streak helped them open the second quarter with a 13-0 run to build a 31-7 advantage. After
the Red Devils had seven turnovers on their first 11 possessions of the period, Bokich ended the scoreless streak
with a three 2:27 before halftime off a Cernugel pass and then nailed another three
53 seconds before halftime. In the second half, the Red Devils closed to 39-18
in the third quarter and 47-26 after another Bokich three following a Cernugel three
and inside basket by Amegadjie. “At times, we’ had some really nice
offensive sets and then we’d rest on defense,” Persinger said. “I
thought that our second-half effort was a lot better. I thought it stemmed from the fact that they were communicating
with each other on the defensive end.” Speaking
of defense, Schaumburg’s current winning streak has included limiting three opponents to 30 points or fewer.
On Wednesday, the Saxons complemented that by equaling their single-game season high of eight
threes in just the first half. Ariana Doroskin (15 points) and reserve
Alyssa Orozco (13 points) each had three threes. The other first-half threes came from Talia
Torosian for her six points. Reserve Mady Vodicka had the last three with 4:09 left. “Probably
in our three-point shooting, just to have all three of our shooters to be going at once (our best half offensively),”
Schaumburg coach Jackie Strauch said. “Sometimes you have one on and the other
two aren’t. To have all of our shooters on at once is advantageous for us. That
was a nice first half for us offensively and it allowed us, for this first game after
Christmas, to get everyone in the game.” The Saxons also allowed just nine
offensive rebounds off the Red Devils' 29 missed shots. Schaumburg opened the game in
a zone defense and later switched to man-to-man. “(During the winning streak)
I think we’re rebounding well on the defensive end. We’re collecting the
ball mostly after one shot,” Strauch said. “And I think we can play all different kinds of defenses. We can go
into zones. Sometimes we go into man and against certain teams, like St. Charles North
(a 31-27 victory Dec. 18), we lived and died by the zone. We’re holding teams
to low numbers.” Schaumburg’s previous best of eight threes came in
beating Elk Grove 47-43 Nov. 27. Last season, the Red Devils defeated the Grenadiers
50-41 in the Falcon Classic’s consolation championship game for ninth place overall.

VARSITY VIDEO INTERVIEW! Proviso West game

Maddie Bokich, Sarah Cernugel, Kendall Butler
|
Varsity game summary Hinsdale Central 44, Proviso West 41 Friday, Dec. 14
|
A great
start and a composed finish combined to give the Hinsdale Central girls basketball team its first West Suburban Conference
Silver Division victory Friday.
The Red Devils withstood the pressure of the final minute to close out a 44-41 victory at Proviso West.
Sarah Cernugel had 13 points with five of the Red Devils’ seven three-pointers. Maddie Bokich, Kendall Butler and
Maria Rivera each had eight points and Maiwen Amegadjie added five.
Rivera made her one-and-bonus free throw with 1.6 seconds left for the final point. The second attempt missed but time expired
as Proviso West’s Josylin Simmons-Doxie chased the rebound near the sidelines and was unable to muster a final shot.
In the Red Devils’ first victory Nov. 24, Rivera sank two free throws with 17.6 seconds for the final points in
a 43-41 victory over St. Edward.
Leading 40-31 entering the fourth quarter Friday, the Red Devils had the margin cut to 43-41 after Simmons-Doxie’s
conventional three-point play with 26.6 seconds left. The Panthers' Ariana Dunlap stole the ball back with 16 seconds,
but Asia Flowers’s could not convert her driving shot from the right of the lane off the backboard.
Cernugel got the rebound and was fouled. From there, the Red Devils withstood two more fouls off inbounds passes before Rivera
went to the line after receiving the seventh foul of the half.
The Red Devils opened with one of their best offensive quarters of the season to take a 20-5 lead. Bokich had seven points
in the quarter, including her three, and Butler and Amegadjie each had six points.
Simmons-Doxie had 23 points, 16 in the second half with four of her five threes.

Tina Rivera, Maria Rivera

Kendall Butler, Sarah Cernugel
|
Varsity game summary Hinsdale Central 43, St. Edward 41 Saturday, Nov. 24 At
Hinsdale South's Brenda Whitesell Invitational (7th-place game)
|
The Hinsdale
Central girls basketball team’s strong start and composure at the end combined for a great result Saturday.
The Red Devils posted their first victory of the season by edging St. Edward 43-41 in the seventh-place game of Hinsdale
South’s Brenda Whitesell Invitational.
Hinsdale Central (1-3) led several times during the game but fell behind 41-38 with 1:29 left before coming through down
the stretch.
With the game tied 41-41, sophomore Maria Howell rebounded Sarah Cernugel’s missed three-pointer, was fouled and made
two free throws with 17.6 seconds.
St. Edward’s Madeline Ellsworth attempted a three a few steps behind the top of the key with pressure from Cernugel
and the shot fell short and out of bounds to the Red Devils, who ran out the final 1.2 seconds.
Cernugel led the Red Devils with 11 points and three threes. Junior Kendall Butler had nine points and 10 rebounds, Rivera
and senior Tina Rivera each had six points and six rebounds, junior Anna Howell notched five points on two big third-quarter
baskets, including a three and senior Maddie Bokich had four points, six rebounds and three assists.
Only six seconds after a Red Devils’ timeout with 1:19 left, Cernugel became open in the right corner and took a
pass from Bokich to connect on her third three-pointer to tie the game. Cernugel then deflected a St. Edward pass that Maria
Rivera intercepted in the lane with 45 seconds.
Butler’s first three of the season put the Red Devils ahead 38-37 with 4:24 remaining. The Red Devils then went
scoreless their next five possessions and the Green Wave for nearly four minutes, which included two of Tina Rivera’s
three blocks on back-to-back possessions.
Hinsdale Central scored the last five points of the first quarter to lead 9-5 and improved the margin to 15-8 early in
the second quarter on baskets by Butler to the left of the lane and Bokich and Maria Rivera inside.
Two baskets by reserve guard Mia Castro put St. Edward ahead 22-21 at the half. Back-to-back threes and later back-to-back
field goals by Cernugel and Howell had the Red Devils back ahead 33-27 but a basket and three by Ellsworth cut the lead to
33-32 entering the fourth quarter.
Ellsworth had 17 points with one three. Castro and Samantha Ottinger (2 threes) had six points apiece. Like the Red
Devils, St. Edward is starting pretty much anew after graduating nine seniors. The Green Wave again is playing up in Class
